Lou Schuler talks about running for weight loss, and if it works. Most people pick up running after years of doing nothing. At first, you definitely will see results — coz you’ve been sitting on your ass for ever. But over the mid and long-term, you are going to eat away your muscles, not just fat. That’s what endurance sports will do, if they are the only form of exercise you are getting. I am not against running — I love it, as part of playing a sport. There are a lot of you out there who love running for a variety of reasons. I am not going to try stop you — that’s dumb. I am just saying you should round out your workout by adding in strength and mobility work. Be smart about it.
Continuing on that, a good article about training an endurance athlete — by tweaking the training to focus on speed and intensity, as opposed to volume. If you want to get a bit crazier, check out CrossFit Endurance.
An easy to read post, that breaks down a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, that compares eating grains (oatmeal, in this case) to eating real food (an omelette, in this case). The study has a small sample size of twelve but is pretty interesting to read. The participants were fed three different meals containing the same amount of calories.
People consumed 81% more calories during the five hours after eating instant oatmeal than after eating the same number of calories as an omelet and fruit—and 19% more calories after eating steel-cut oatmeal than after eating an omelet and fruit.
Finally, a pretty awesome recipe for Coconut Milk Kefir, from Mark Sisson. Am gonna give it a try tonight! I love kefir but get only the low-fat versions at my local store. Plus, it is sweetened too much with zero-cal sweeteners. I am guessing using coconut milk will give it a natural sweet taste. Am gonna make a batch with raw milk too!
